It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere…[Weekly Rambling]

May 4th, 2008, by Nicholas Mercer in /dev/random

First off, I would like to thank everyone for their patience and continued readership as this blog has had a rocky year of lacking content, poor scheduling, and much more!

As I said in my last post, I’m just putting some final touches on this design such as changing a few colors and adding archives from the default theme. Once these little things are done tomorrow or Tuesday, I’ll start pushing out some real content every other day to keep you the readers happy and satisfied while trying to build a larger community.

The PC Doctor, aka Marty Tennant

So anyone who has been following my Twitter over the past two weeks has seen many references to the “Village Idiots” and a gentleman by the name of “Marty Tennant.”

This man is resident in the town of my employer and has a small following of users on his site (http://www.citizensreport.com/ - no link love) who love nothing more than to discuss local politics and criticize (yet link to) my employer.

How does this affect me and how did I get drawn into this little drama? I simply responded to a message on his forums correcting a statement he made regarding some of my code and it quickly turned into a “bash Nick” festival over on his site.

Long story short, the drama seems to have subsided once he realized that I have absolutely no respect in him nor do I personally care about his opinion. Several threats were sent to myself as well as my girlfriend from this man and even - wait for it - threatened to call my boss over this situation (whom was already well aware of the situation).

I guess not having been someone who grew up in a small town or not being someone who really cares about local politics, it’s just hard for me to understand people like this. I will admit though that this man and his followers messages via email and on his message board have given myself and Caesi two weeks full of laughter and enjoyment.

Side Note: Thanks for everyone that sent me the list of vulnerabilities in Simple Machines Forum 1.1.4 as well as the gentleman who sent me the nifty Perl script. None of these were used as it’s easier to fix a problem by just not giving an attention whore any more attention.

Weekly Links

Be fair warned, my weekly speed linking is going to quite grow in numbers due to some new organization methods to gather these over the week. For now though, enjoy the following:

Last but not least, some of you guys might remember a while back I interviewed with a local company called Fuel Interactive, but things didn’t work out with getting the job.  However, I would highly suggest you go take a look at their blog as they have a very large amount of good information regarding Twitter and how to use it effectively:

Weekend At The Movies:

Here at the beach and many other places across the US, Iron Man was premiered on Thursday night instead of Friday and I was lucky enough to head over and check the movie out. I went into it not really expecting much of a good movie at all, but amazingly, the movie absolutely kicks ass! Go see it when you get a chance!

Last night after going to Hard Rock Park (which I was highly disappointed in, but had free VIP tickets to visit), Caesi and I went out to see “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” Upon leaving, I was surprised to hear that Caesi didn’t enjoy it seeing as how it’s more of a chick flick and I thought it was pretty funny. Not exactly Iron Man, but if you’re looking for an enjoyable movie to go check out, go see this one.

Create South

Here in Myrtle Beach, we are not exactly known for technology related conferences, so when I heard about Create South, I was more than excited that someone was doing something of this nature locally.

Sadly though, the day of the conference (as well as the week leading up to the event), I was sick with a pretty nasty ear infection and wasn’t able to make it. Sadly I didn’t get a chance to meet alot of the local guys like ScrewTheMan, AndrePope, Brian Carter, etc.

So that about covers it…

We’ve got a little bit of a recap done for the past month or so, and now it’s time to move forward with the future and start truly planning things out.  Expect content to start rolling out early this week with an updated version of my years goals and how to make them happen.

Have a great weekend!
